Solar Village

The Solar Village in the area of Pefki in Attica, Greece is one of the most characteristic urban environmental designs in a temperate climate.
The major principle taken in consideration was the orientation of the buildings. They all face South, in order to achieve better heating conditions in the winter, while on the same time using the light of the sun to create better visibility conditions. On the same page, the higher buildings was placed towards the North and they degrade to the South. This simple arrangement creates a barrier to the cold northern wind that protects the lower height buildings. In order to achieve better urban ventilation, there have been created "green" pathways with orientation East-West in order to make a cooler microclimate as well as provide shade during summer. The distance of the buildings is also very important. It allows the sun to penetrate during the winter inside the apartments and the shading during summer is made individually for each apartment. |
